Inside the county of Velas are some of the most beautiful landscapes of the island. The typical Fajãs – natural platforms between the cliffs and the ocean created by landslides – are a paradise on Earth.

Among them, Fajã do Ouvidor with its iconic natural pool Poça do Simão Dias is not to be missed. Swim in one of the most wonderful pools you have ever seen, protected by a high cliff of dark basalt and dotted with crystal clear water.

Also to be mentioned are Fajã d’Além and its hundreds of fruit trees and diverse plantations. There, have a taste of a simple life by the ocean and meet incredible local people loving this way of life.

With a lot of historical, cultural, and religious heritage, there are many significant monuments to visit in Velas. A nice stroll in the narrow typical streets is a great way to better get to know Velas. From museums to churches and forts, if you like different architecture, you will be served.

For geology lovers, some interesting features can also be noted, such as a beautiful lava arch by the coast. At Poça dos Frades, or at Preguiça area, locals love to take a dip into the ocean. The natural pools filled with transparent waters between dark lava rocks are beautiful scenery to swim in the Atlantic with an incredible view over Pico and Faial islands.
