Santo Espírito

Santo Espírito in the island of Santa Maria is of great historical and cultural significance. However, the landscapes around also display natural and architectural wonders to the eyes of the travellers. Explore a quiet yet unmissable part of Santa Maria.

About Santo Espírito

A remote town where life seems to have a slower pace. Santo Espírito is a nice place to get to know the roots of the real Santa Maria Island like a local, away from the tourist crowds. The architecture of the houses and monuments inside the village was influenced by the one of Baixo Alentejo or Algarve as the settlers came from there.

The nearby landscape in Maia between ocean and mountain, includes vineyards, natural pools, and a huge hidden waterfall not to be missed while visiting Santa Maria.

Nature & Geology

The small and quiet village is worth a visit due to its iconic central church considered as one of the most beautiful in the archipelago.

Starting from this village is one of the most stunning linear trails of the island, going until Maia. It is about 4km long for 2 hours of walking, providing amazing views over the ocean, heavenly bays, great flora diversity, and even a waterfall!

Maia, in Santo Espírito, is a paradise in the summer for the ones who love the ocean. It is a great spot to swim in the Atlantic, inside its safe bay classified as a Nature Reserve.

Experiences and Tips

The pool of oceanic water is where locals and travelers meet to relax and refresh themselves. A real sanctuary of beauty and peacefulness.

A visit to the ethnographic museum of Santa Maria is also mandatory when in Espírito Santo. There, you can see a great collection of ceramics from several parts of the world, in addition to learning more about the island in itself.

Another point of interest inside Santo Espírito village is the artisanal cooperative. This is where you can buy traditional fabrics like carpets or blankets and delicious local food, namely typical bread and sweets.
