Salto do Cabrito

Hidden inside a lush forest and set in a scenery straight out of a fairy-tale, Salto do Cabrito is an impressive waterfall about 40 meters high. In the crystal clear waters at the bottom, a swim close to the waterfall will make you feel totally connected to nature. Harmony is in the air at this natural masterpiece.

About Salto do Cabrito

The waterfall of Salto do Cabrito is a place full of history. Near the waterfall is the Hydro Power Plant of Fajã Redonda, built in the 1920s. It provided electricity to Ponta Delgada. The energy was produced with all manual equipment. A very important structure for the life of Azoreans in the 19th century.

Only about 20 minutes away by car from Ponta Delgada, Salto do Cabrito should be on your to-do list of São Miguel. It is accessible by the road going from Lagoa do Fogo to Ribeira Grande.

Nature & Geology

When you see the waterfall from afar, you can clearly see the two stages of the waterfall. First, the clear waters flow into what seems to be a cave, then the flow of water gets more obvious, passing in front of the cliff and down to a little pond. It is quite a spectacular setting and a very good photograph subject.

Enjoy being there to also explore the wonderful green surroundings. Take a walk in the forest, follow the river, this natural playground is full of surprises. It is really hard to stay indifferent in front of such beauty.

Experiences and Tips

Almost a tradition when visiting Salto do Cabrito is to swim in its fresh waters. The sound of the waterfall and the birds singing in the nearby forest is truly hypnotizing.

It is possible to go to Salto do Cabrito by car or on foot. The circular trail of about 3h (4km), starting at Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande, leads you through historical sites and natural wonders.

The special setting of the waterfall allows canyoning lovers to jump, rappel, slide and climb in a watercourse surrounded by an amazing environment.
