Povoação

A great variety of natural wonders can be found in the beautiful county of Povoação. About 1h away from Ponta Delgada by car, Povoação is worth a detour thanks to its many unique landscapes providing a feeling of communion with nature. Discover where life started in São Miguel.

About Povoação

The town of Povoação is actually where everything started on the island, back in 1432. Settlers first set foot there and populated this particular place. There are several monuments in town to remember this historical time period. 

Since its settlement in the 20th century, the town relied on the production of cereals, mostly wheat. At the Wheat Museum, you can see the whole history of Povoação and the significance of this particular resource for the life of locals. Also, you will truly understand why Povoação is called the barn of the island.

Nature & Geology

Being remote from the cities, Povoação is a tranquil place to enjoy quality time in nature. There are many beaches made of stones or sand inside the county. For the most popular option, the beach of Ribeira Quente is fairly packed in the summertime, and for a more hidden one: Praia do Morro is what you should be looking for.

Povoação is actually part of the big Caldeira da Povoação, a huge volcanic depression of about 6.5km in diameter. It is said that the caldera is about 800,000 years old. With time, rivers created beautiful green valleys and interflows called Lombas.

It is in Povoação that the geological treasure of the island – Furnas – is located. From there, you can enjoy natural hot springs, some of the most beautiful trails of the Azores, and encounter waterfalls as well as a mysterious lake.

Experiences and Tips

From the viewpoint of Lomba do Cavaleiro, you can see the entire town of Povoação. A spectacular view for seeing the whole picture. And a great spot for photographs.

Tip: there is a beautiful waterfall not so known by travelers, located between the two tunnels of Ribeira Quente. 

Inside the county, discover wonderful trails displaying amazing nature, such as Agrião trail and Sanguinho trail. Both are worth walking the whole way to have little natural surprises like scenic waterfalls, dense forests, an abandoned village, or a wild peninsula with a splendid house on top of it.

    What airlines fly to Sao Miguel, Azores?

    Flying to São Miguel Island is quite easy and a good deal! There are low-cost companies such as Ryanair offering trips all year round.     What to do in Sao Miguel when raining?

    The weather in the Azores isn’t always sunny, as you may already know. But fortunately, there is a lot to be seen other than the incredible volcanos and some other outdoor spots. Only in Ponta Delgada you have a lot of interesting museums, beautiful churches, the Farmer’s Market, the Gruta do Carvão, between many other interesting places to visit.
