Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is officially one of the best counties in Portugal to live in. The modern city is the biggest and most populated of the Azores. There, the ocean breeze, mountain views and delicious local food are part of the everyday life. Despite being an energetic city, there is no rush in Ponta Delgada, nor annoying traffic jam.

About Ponta Delgada

In the beginning, Ponta Delgada was only a small fishing village. But quickly, thanks to its safe bays, it became the most important harbor for trades on the island. 

Ponta Delgada was declared a city in 1546 and considered as the capital of the island after the first capital – Vila Franca do Campo – was destroyed in 1522 by a terrible earthquake.

Nowadays, Ponta Delgada with its almost 70,000 inhabitants is a cosmopolitan city attracting visitors from all over the world.

Nature & Geology

In addition to being a modern and active city, Ponta Delgada has a lot of nature to display. For instance at the botanical garden Antonio Borges, you can see a great variety of plants, flowers, and trees.

Under the vibrant city is located a quiet place of enormous geological interest: Gruta do Carvão. It is possible to visit this long lava tube with a guide for a unique underground experience. 

For ocean lovers, the pool of Pesqueiros located right near the city center is the perfect place to relax. Sunbath on the warm ground and take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean without having to leave the city.

The vibrant city has so much to offer in terms of experiences. The most common activity is whale and dolphin watching. Indeed, around the island, we have 4 resident cetacean species including sperm whales! They are here all year round.

Only in Ponta Delgada you have a lot of interesting museums, beautiful churches, the Farmer’s Market, the Gruta do Carvão, between many other interesting places to visit.

    What airlines fly to Sao Miguel, Azores?

    Flying to São Miguel Island is quite easy and a good deal! There are low-cost companies such as Ryanair offering trips all year round.     What is the best season for bird watching in São Miguel island?

    It all depends on what you want to see. For resident species, the best season is summertime, even if they are here all year round, this is the time of the year we can easier spot them. For migratory birds, the best time is at the end of winter, during the springtime and also at the beginning of autumn.
