Nordeste

If paradise is a place on Earth, then Nordeste is the closest to what it might look like. It is one of the most flowery areas in Europe, filled with natural beauty and exuberant flora. The gorgeousness of São Miguel’s nature is packed inside this region on the east end. From a park full of waterfalls to a viewpoint made to watch sunrises, there are many things to discover in Nordeste.

About Nordeste

Nordeste is a municipality and a county of nine municipalities, located on the northeastern side of São Miguel. Some of the enriching activities for the area are fishing and agriculture. However, tourism is growing thanks to the natural beauty of Nordeste.

The lighthouse of Arnel in Nordeste was the first to be built in the Azores, in 1876.

If you want to dive deeper into this wonderful region, the municipal museum of Nordeste displays traditional objects of the daily life of locals back in the days when agriculture was everything for this little town.

Nature & Geology

The biggest laurel forest area of the island occupies Nordeste. This region is also well known for its multicolor flowers blooming in the spring and summertime. Soils are fertile and water stocks are full due to humidity present all year round.

Did you know that in Nordeste lives one of the rarest birds in all Europe: the Priolo? It was seriously threatened but thanks to the effort of associations and projects to replant its natural habitat, it is now no longer in great danger. Visit the Priolo Environmental Centre to know more about this cute little bird.

There are also hidden pools and beaches to be explored. For instance, Lombo Gordo beach is a unique natural treasure, remote and hidden by cliffs. It is best to go in the morning due to the sun orientation.

Experiences and Tips

On the road to Nordeste, there are many viewpoints to explore. The famous Ponta da Madrugada and Ponta do Sossego are where locals admire the sun rising over the infinite ocean.

Pico da Vara is the highest point of São Miguel Island. At about 1,105m above sea level, Pico da Vara offers incredible views over the entire island on a sunny day.

Tip: Several trails lead to the top, the easiest one is from Graminhais. We offer tours to get there, join us!

Another natural paradise in Nordeste is Ribeira dos Caldeirões park, displaying wonderful waterfalls of all sizes and shapes. A river and lush vegetation create an idyllic scenario.
