Maia

Peacefulness and the smell of the ocean mixed gives the town of Maia. A quiet coastal village on top of an old lava flow with luxuriant nature and a rich culture and history. Maia is far away from tourist crowds and camera flashes. Discover a place locals know how to appreciate.

About Maia

Located on the north shore of São Miguel Island, Maia is part of Ribeira Grande county. Nested right on the coast with always the breeze of the ocean flowing through its streets, Maia and its 2,000 inhabitants enjoy a tranquil life.

Its name comes from the founder of the town, Inês da Maia, who developed the town back in the 15th century. In fact, Maia is one of the oldest municipalities in Ribeira Grande county.

The municipality includes Gorreana tea plantations, the oldest in Europe. Our tea is unique and tasty. A visit to the factory is a must if you want to know more about this special process.

Nature & Geology

When nature and people ally, it creates the town of Maia. Indeed, the village is located on top of a 10,000 years old volcanic fajã – that is to say a natural platform between the ocean and the mountain, created by volcanoes.

In Maia, there is the beach Calhau da Maia to enjoy a calm environment by the ocean. This beach is never so crowded, remaining a natural secret well-kept by locals. It has easy access and sea lovers like to bodyboard on the wild waves of the Atlantic.

Viola Beach is also a very good option to lie down in the sun. Surrounded by cliffs, it provides an intimate and peaceful atmosphere. There is a small river and waterfall to be discovered by the cliffs.

Experiences and Tips

A popular thing to do in Maia is going to the natural pools made of lava rocks. It is a pleasant place, mostly in the summer, even if water temperatures are accepted all year round. With a naked eye, you can see corals through the transparent sea.

There is a magnificent 5km trail from Maia called Praia da Viola and Moinhos da Ribeira Funda. This track going by the coast shows different points of interest like old mills made of stones, a beautiful waterfall, the secret beach of Viola, and tobacco cultures. It is the ideal trail to discover the Azorean nature off the beaten track.
