Hiking in Relva - half day

Rocha da Relva is the perfect hidden place for hiking lovers. The only way to go there is walking. This short walk starts and ends in the same place and takes us to a beautiful hidden gem in São Miguel Island. Some locals take donkeys with them to help carry things down and up. From Ponta Delgada, we will pick you up around 9 am or 2 pm whether you prefer a morning trip or afternoon trip, depending on your plans, and we will head Westward for about 8km (5 miles) until reaching the city of Relva.

Going down, you will notice the interesting geological formations just beside you throughout most of the hike. At the bottom, there are a few weekend houses of traditional construction as well as some old wine cellars. As you walk through the small village, the sound of the waves lapping against the rocks is pretty much all you can hear! On the way back, we will take the same path up to the top, enjoying the ocean views along the way. The walking trail in itself will be around 4.5km long. We will then drop you off back in Ponta Delgada.

The price for this activity is 37,5€ per adult, 18,75€ per child.

Please note that the minimum age for walking tours is 8 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can we have a snack in the small place of Rocha da Relva?
A: Rocha da Relva has only a few summer houses, so there are no shops there. However, you are welcome to bring a snack.

Q: Where is Rocha da Relva?
A: Rocha da Relva is located along the South Coast of São Miguel island, only a few kilometers away from Ponta Delgada Westward.

Q: Can we take a dip once we arrive at the bottom of Rocha da Relva?
A: There is no proper beach at Rocha da Relva. Sometimes, the most adventurous locals walk on the big rocks and go to the ocean, but this is not something we would recommend.

Q: Is the walking trail hard?
A: Hiking in Rocha da Relva is not especially hard, but you have to be able to walk down and up. We will not take concrete roads but the tracks are passable. Futurismo provides walking sticks for the ones who are used to walk with it.
