Fogo lake is one of the most beautiful lakes of São Miguel island and one of the best naturally preserved throughout the years. Fogo Lake is definitely a place of interest for people visiting São Miguel.
From Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint, you will start the hike to descend to the margin of the lake, following a dirt path. Once we are at the bottom, we can walk along the beach made of the peculiar white sand of pumice stone. We will spend some time down by the lake and our guide will tell you everything about this mysterious place including the vegetation and conservation projects of the famous lake, as well as its importance.
On the way back up, we will take the same trail, having the wonderful lake at our back. The whole walking trip will take approximately 3km (2 miles). At the end of the trip, we will drop you back in Ponta Delgada.
Note: It is not possible to swim in Fogo lake for preservation and conservation reasons of the Nature Reserve.
This walk is not recommended for people with knee/joint problems. Please let us know if you have such a condition.
Bring comfortable light clothes, sweater, raincoat, walking boots or shoes, a hat, sunblock, backpack, water.
Q: Will I be able to swim in the lake?
A: No, swimming in Fogo Lake is not possible since it is a natural reserve, for preservation purposes.
Q: Do I need to be in a good physical condition for this tour?
A: It is not a hard trail but some physical conditions are better to be able to walk downward and upward on uneven paths. Also, we will not walk on a concrete road, but dirt tracks. Please let us know if you have any physical restriction. If you feel more comfortable with walking sticks, Futurismo will provide them.
Q: Where is Fogo Lake?
A: Fogo lake is a lake inside a crater located about 25 minutes away from Ponta Delgada, at approximately 20km (12 miles) farther East.
