Ready for an adventure in the Azores? Your holidays in São Miguel start here! During this activity, you will have the opportunity to watch some of the 28 cetacean species that can be found in the Azores. Whales and dolphins are regularly seen during our half day tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine wildlife.
As they are wild animals, each tour is a surprise! We cannot control where they will be or if they will show up during every trip! Our guarantee is that if you do not see any whale nor dolphin we do give you the chance to reschedule your tour for free.
The tour will start in our shop in Ponta Delgada harbor. Before the boat trip, our biologists will give you a briefing to explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how we respect the animals and rules of observation at sea as well as some historical facts. During the tour, each passenger is required to wear a life vest (except on our catamaran). Futurismo offers different types of boats for different levels of comfort
The staff onboard will warn you if they see anything in the water and give some explanations and details about the specific species that you will meet.
The trip will last about 3 hours before going back to the harbor, where we will welcome you back in our shop with some local tea.
Later during the day, our biologists will see and edit the photos that they took in the trip and you will be able to see them later on, on our blog Azores Whales. If we have spectacular pictures, they might also be on our Facebook and Instagram account.

Q: What kind of whales and dolphins I might see during this tour and what is the best season for whale watching in the Azores?
A: There are four resident species here in the Azores: sperm whales, Risso’s dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and common dolphins. These species are present all year round. The best season for whale and dolphin watching in the Azores is Springtime - March to June. During this time of the year, baleen whales are migrating and passing by our waters. Thus, it is possible to see blue whales, fin whales, and sei whales among others. The summertime is also ideal to spot pilot whales, beaked whales or spotted dolphins for example. Visit our website if you want to know more about cetacean species in the Azores.
Q: I have lower back problems but I would like to go on a whale and dolphin watching trip. Can I go on a tour?
A: We have a catamaran that is more comfortable and stable than the zodiac and fiberglass boats, but before you come you should consult your physician.
Q:I am pregnant but I would like to do whale watching. Is it possible?
A: In this situation, we advise to go on a tour aboard the catamarans. These boats are more comfortable and stable.
Q: What if I am seasick?
A: We advise avoiding eating anything overly spicy, acidic, fatty or dairy before the boat trip. Don’t overeat but come well fed. Once on the boat, look at the horizon and get fresh air. If you feel bad, the staff on the boat will help you.
Q: Does Futurismo provide equipment if it is raining during the boat trip?
A: Yes, we provide rain jackets and waterproof trousers for the boat trip in case of bad weather except aboard the catamarans because you can go inside.
Q: What if I don’t see any cetacean (either dolphins nor whales) during the tour?
A: Nature offers no guarantee. Sometimes, even though not so often, it happens that you won’t see any cetacean. In that case, Futurismo will allow you to book another tour with us for free to try your luck again.
