On this tour, we will feel and experience the volcanic origins of the island in Furnas, a magical place full of geothermal activity. After picking up in Ponta Delgada at 9 am, we start by visiting the Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake Calderas), a place where we cook the famous “Cozido das Furnas”, one of the most emblematic dishes of the Azores. Is a mixture of regional vegetables and meats cooked with the help of the volcanic activity. A gastronomic experience you cannot miss. This is a very special meal cooked only with the steam of the Earth.
Later on, we will visit the centenary Terra Nostra botanical garden that is famous for its extraordinary collection of native plants from the Azores, as well as others from all over the world that have adapted to the local garden conditions. At the end of the visit, you are invited to go for a dip in an iron-rich hot water swimming pool that has a temperature of 35-40ºC (95-104°F), an enchanting and relaxing experience.
Next, we will have the Cozido meal that is served in a local restaurant. After lunch, we will visit the town of Furnas, with its fumaroles and springs with water of different tastes.
On the way back to Ponta Delgada, we will stop at several beautiful viewpoints along the North Coast and also at the tea plantation Gorreana where we will be able to visit the working tea factory and have a lovely break to taste the local tea.
The price for this tour is 74€ per adult (from 13 years old), 43,75€ per child (6-12 years old), free of charge for the youngest (0-5 years old).

Q: Where is Furnas?
A: Furnas is located about 43km (27 miles) away from Ponta Delgada Eastward. It takes approximately 40 minutes to go there without stopping.
Q: What is Cozido das Furnas?
A: Cozido is one of the most typical and emblematic dishes of São Miguel. What is special about it is that all the ingredients are placed in a pan which is buried in the hot ground next to the natural boilers of Furnas. The average cooking time is 5 hours. The recipe usually includes chicken, beef, pig leg, bacon, pork chop, potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, cabbage, kale, black pudding, chorizo, and yams. Check our video.
Q: Are there particular recommendations when taking a dip into the iron-rich hot pool?
A: Yes, avoid white or light-colored swimsuit, because they could turn orange-yellowish. Don’t wear jewelry while in the pool because it could also turn into another color due to the iron inside the water. Also, avoid getting your hair wet especially if you have dyed hair because it can become dry or change the color. Otherwise, just enjoy this extraordinary experience.
Q: What if I don’t want to bathe in the hot spring at Terra Nostra?
A: Bathing in the hot pools of Terra Nostra is not mandatory. You can also enjoy the botanical garden and relax on a bench.
