If you want to spend a whole day exploring the beautiful western part of the island, this tour is definitely what you are looking for. This area is certainly worth spending the entire day to discover its deepest secrets and best views. After the pick up in Ponta Delgada at 9 am, we will drive to the famous Sete Cidades lakes (which can be directly translated as “Seven Cities”), where you will have awesome panoramas over the green and blue lakes when you are on the rim of the caldera. Not far away from Sete Cidades, we will head to Lagoa das Empadadas, a beautiful lake less known but not less beautiful! Indeed, the lake is surrounded by a lush green forest, creating a totally different atmosphere.
Then, the third highlight of our day will be another wonderful lake: Lagoa de Santiago. This one may be also part of the most beautiful lakes around São Miguel. It is located near Sete Cidades, in the bottom of a volcanic crater. Its viewpoint will give us a panoramic view of the surrounding green mountains. Depending on the weather and the point of view, this lake can appear light green or deep blue.
We will leave the beautiful area of Sete Cidades to explore the coast. First, we will stop at Ponta do Escalvado, whose viewpoint offers a great panorama over the sea and west coast of São Miguel. From there, at an altitude of approximately 150m (500ft), you can see Ponta da Ferraria and Mosteiros with its beautiful rock formations. We will discover these two places right after.
Mosteiros is next on the list. This coastal village is unique thanks to its fabulous rock formations rising up from the ocean. It is also one of the favorite spots on the island for surfers. Last but not least, we will stop at Ponta da Ferraria, a magical place where the water from the Atlantic Ocean is naturally heated by a volcanic fissure. When the tide is low, it is possible to bathe in the warm salty water to end the day in the perfect way before going back to the city.
The price for this activity is 70€ per adult (from 13 years old), 41,75€ per child (6-12), free of charge for the youngest (0-5 years old).
