      – After a ferry trip of about 30 minutes from Madalena, here we are in the city of Horta.

    • Caldeira

      – Caldeira forms a nature reserve incredibly rich in the endemic flora of the Azores. The giant crater is for sure one of the island’s major natural attractions. It rises up to 1,043m (3,422ft) from the sea level at Cabeço Gordo, the island’s highest point, with a crater diameter of about 2km.

      – Its last eruption happened only a little bit more than 1,000 years ago. It covered more than 70% of the island with a pumice stone.

    • Capelinhos volcano

      – Capelinhos is the youngest volcano of the Azores, formed only 60 years ago. It is still possible to wander through the “lunar” landscape made of ashes.

    • Former whaling station

      – Let’s learn more about the old whaling traditions in the Azores and witness its importance for locals.

    • Local cheese factory

      – Taste the delicious cheese of Faial before taking the ferry back to Pico.

    • Rim of the Caldeira

      – We will have a short briefing before entering the giant crater of 2km in diameter. Caldeira is a Nature Reserve, the perfect place for nature lovers.

      – The descent starts from an altitude of 1,000m to one of the most stunning and major volcanic “cauldrons” of the Azores. The nature reserve is full of endemic vegetation in an almost perfect state of conservation.

    • The descent

      – The trail is a steep and narrow dirt track passing by different biotopes covered with dense vegetation. We will reach the bottom of the crater 400m deeper, surrounded by gigantic, almost vertical green-covered walls.

      – There, we will encounter perfect silence and a hidden waterfall. The descent takes an average of 1.5h and the ascent on the same trail about 1h.

    • Back to Horta and Madalena

      – After the hike, it is time to go back to Horta. We will take the ferry to Madalena or you can enjoy the town on your own.

    • The Rim of the Caldeira

      – We will drive up to the rim of the Caldeira, to the 2.5h walking trail circling the cauldron. Caldeira rises up to 1,043m (3,422ft). It was in 1972 the first nature reserve of the Azores due to the luxurious and well-preserved Laurissilva present there.

      – We will wander through hedges of hydrangeas. On a beautiful day, it is possible to see the neighboring islands of São Jorge and Pico.

    • The way back

      – After this beautiful hike, you can stay a little bit longer to discover the town of Horta on your own. Otherwise, you can take the ferry back to Pico right away.

    • Ferry trip

      – From the harbor of Madalena or São Roque, we will take the ferry to Velas. It takes about 1h20 or 45 minutes respectively. Once on the island, we start to explore São Jorge aboard a comfortable van.

    • Local cheese factory

      – This is where we produce the most famous cheese of the Azores. The cheese from São Jorge is of raw milk, from grass-fed cows on the island. The maturing process of this cheese can be from 3 to 12 months.

    • Urzelina

      – Urzelina is on the islands’ south coast. There, we will hear the fascinating story about the little parish’s church tower. In fact, the building was spared from the lava flow of the last eruption happening on the island in 1808.

    • Fajã dos Vimes

      – São Jorge has many “fajãs” (flat platforms formed by lava or landslides) along the coast. One of them, Fajã dos Vimes, has Europe’s exclusive commercial coffee plantations.

      – After seeing how the plants grow, we will have the chance to taste this exquisite coffee.

    • Fajã dos Cubres

      – We will then go to the north coast. There, we can enjoy breathtaking views over the northern cliffs and Fajã dos Cubres, as well as the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. Both formed by landslides in 1757, during the strongest earthquake ever felt in the Azores.

    • Poça do Simão Dias

      – Further, in Fajã do Ouvidor, you can take a dip in one of the most beautiful natural pools: Poça do Simão Dias.

    • Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

      – The hiking part will be about 10km long, for a total time of around 3.5 hours. We will wander along pastures, endemic vegetation and water courses. You can also take a dip in the crystal-clear water of a beautiful waterfall before arriving at the lava delta.

      – Once we reach the Fajã, which is also considered to be one of the best surfing spots of Portugal, we will learn what makes it so special and why it is declared a nature reserve.

    • Fajã dos Cubres

      – After a picnic lunch and some free time to fully explore this unique place, we will continue to Fajã dos Cubres.

      – There is only one access for the circulation of quad bikes. They ensure the supply of the few people still having their permanent residence there. After being trapped for several days following the last earthquake in 1980, most of the inhabitants abandoned their homes.

    • The Afternoon Part

      – After eating, we will have a nice ride along the North coast of São Miguel Island. It shows with very beautiful views along the way, including Ponta do Cintrão.

      – We will stop for a bit in Ribeira Grande center and go to Santa Barbara beach.

      – After this day tour full of beautiful landscapes and interesting facts about the Azores, we will head back to Ponta Delgada.

Lajes do Pico is one of the best places in the Azores to go on a whale watching trip. It was here, the first whale watching company of the Azores was born. Due to the depth of the seabed in the south of Pico, the animals get very close to the coast.

Before the boat trip, our marine biologists will explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how we respect the animals and rules of observation at sea as well as some historical facts.

    • Out in the wild

      – Once we navigate, look out for splashes and other signs of marine life presence. During the tour each passenger is required to wear a life vest. Then, after some amazing sightings, we will take you back to the harbor.

    • The night

      – Once you arrive at the top of the volcano, you will settle your camping equipment. Also, you will climb to the smaller cone to observe the sunset.

      – It will be a bit cold up there, but the stars make it all worth it.

    • In the evening
