Lagoa das Sete Cidades: The Enchanted & Inspiring Lagoon

Blog » Travel » Lagoa das Sete Cidades: The Enchanted & Inspiring Lagoon

Lagoa das Sete Cidades – the lake of the ‘Seven Cities’ – is a natural highlight that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Locals and travelers just love to see the lake from various viewpoints around the big volcanic complex. Or simply enjoy the waters down in the crater.

Many people might think that they are two lakes due to the difference in colors. But in fact, it is a two-colored lake. The bridge in the middle doesn’t separate the body of water underneath.

The green and blue lake is not to be missed during your stay in the Azores. It is one of the go-to spots on São Miguel island. It is even considered one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders. In this post, we will tell you all you need to know about the magical Lagoa das Sete Cidades.

In addition to being one of the most famous spots of São Miguel island, Lagoa das Sete Cidades is such an important place for the Autonomous Region of the Azores. In fact, it is the largest lake in the archipelago and a significant freshwater resource for the islands.

Even if you haven’t been to Sete Cidades yet, you probably already know the image of the lake. Indeed, you can see Lagoa das Sete Cidades on many postcards. It is also one of the first landscapes you will find online when searching about the Azores.

Geology & Volcanology

While the whole island of São Miguel has about 35 lakes, Sete Cidades massif alone holds a large part of them. It is inside this 36,000-year-old caldera, in the crater of a dormant volcano, that the biggest lake of them all is located – Lagoa das Sete Cidades.

This ancient stratovolcano gave origin to the lake thanks to the accumulation of ashes at the bottom and the huge green walls of the crater where torrential waters flow.

Did you know | The total area of the lake is about 4.3 km, making it the biggest freshwater resource of the islands, with 33 meters of maximum depth.

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, part of the same lake connected by a narrow strait, are very different ecologically speaking. Indeed, the difference in color can be explained by the difference in depth (the Blue lake is deeper than the Green lake). And also by a bigger presence of algae in Green lake.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades formed during the eruption of a volcano in 1445. Nowadays you can pass in the middle of the lake thanks to a bridge. But back in the days, people would wait in line for a boat to pick them up and drop them on the other side.

The lake of Sete Cidades was a popular spot to handwash laundry. The locals from the village would wash the laundry of the ladies of the bigger towns and transport it by oxcart.

Located on the western side of São Miguel island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Sete Cidades lake belongs to Ponta Delgada county. Recently, it was elected in 2010 as one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders.

Culture & Festivities

Sete Cidades lake was the chosen place for a comic book in the 1950s. In fact, Edgar Jacobs, a famous comics creator, used the lake as the set for ‘Atlantis Mystery’. Pictured as a hidden civilization under the green and blue lake, the locals of Atlantis would then leave their town in spaceships for another planet.

In July 2022, the very first edition of the Azores’ biggest festival took place by the shore of Lagoa das Sete Cidades. The ‘Atlantis Concert for Earth’ organized by Nuno Bettencourt welcomed the Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull, Nicole Scherzinger, and many more international artists to perform on stage. Queen and Sting also offered a live performance to the amazement of the public. Environmentalists and scientists also spoke out and presented solutions for the preservation of our planet Earth.

Fauna & Flora

The lake of Sete Cidades is an essential habitat for wide biodiversity. This is why it is a Protected Landscape of Natura 2000 network. The surroundings of the lake are fundamental for endemic species because it holds primitive vegetation from the islands. For instance, you can find Azores Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), heather (Erica azorica), and many more plants.
