The Basics
What is Whale Watching?
Whale and dolphin watching is the practice of observing whales and dolphins (commonly called cetaceans) in their natural habitat.
What is the best season to do Whale Watching in the Azores?
All year-round, we have sperm whales and several dolphin species. If you want to see the biggest whales in the world, the best season for whale and dolphin watching in the Azores is Springtime – March to June.
During this time of the year, baleen whales are migrating and passing by our waters. Thus, it is possible to see blue whales, fin whales, and sei whales among others.
The summertime is also ideal to spot pilot whales, beaked whales, or spotted dolphins for example.
What are the chances of seeing a cetacean?
98%. Even so, we don’t stop at this rate and offer you a new tour totally for free if you did not see any of these amazing creatures (whale or dolphin) during the tour.
How do you locate the whales and dolphins in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean?
Futurismo has more lookouts than any other tour operator in the Azores so we always know where the animals are. Lookouts are people on the coast looking for cetaceans with binoculars.
Apart from this ancestral method, we can locate the whales and dolphins based on acoustic data thanks to our directional hydrophone which will allow us to hear and record sounds emitted by cetaceans audible to the human ear.

Reviews What people think about
Richard, USAThe whale watch was beyond our expectations. The boat was fast and stable, the crew helpful, friendly, and professional. We saw over a dozen sperm whales, a pair of fin whales, and a blue whale.
We also did a really excellent walking tour of Ponta Delgada and two excellent jeep tours. All were excellent and were well worth the time and the price. Futurismo delivered 110%.
John, USAWe have done 5 trips with Futurismo and they have all been great. Our guide, Thomas, tweaked the agenda a little to suit the needs of our small group.
The full-day whale watching is not to be missed and the dolphin swimming was fantastic, even in rough seas.
Our other highlights were Terra Nostra gardens and hot bathing pools at Furnas and cycling and kayaking at Sete Cidades.
5margarett, USAWow fabulous is the only way to describe this trip – Our guide Gena was very informative and not afraid to try different things
Ryan, UKWe got to see some blue whales, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and the Ilhéu da Vila Franca. The staff was very knowledgeable and fluent in English and Portuguese.
There were 3 marine biologists on board, so there was plenty of information readily available. We will definitely be doing this again someday, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had!
Coastal230924, PortugalAnyone visiting the Azores archipelago must-visit dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.
In addition to watching the cetaceans, you can visit the islet of Vila Franca, for a paradisiacal bath in the transparent waters of this natural reserve.
Nina, GermanyI originally booked the half-day whale watching only, but since it was incredibly difficult to get to Ilheu da Vila Franca (long waiting cue every morning) changed the booking on the phone.
The trip on the boat out was really nice, it’s a stable boat, was not very full (even though the tour was fully booked) and we could move around in the boat once we saw whales. In the three hours on the water, we saw 2-3 adult and one immature sperm whale, and one group of common bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins each. This was not my first whale-watching trip (Iceland, Tenerife,…), but by far my best so far!
After a really good lunch in a restaurant in Vila Franca do Campo, we went on the regular ferry out to Ilheu da Vila Franca, where we had about 2.5 hours. Very nice, and a high recommendation!
Anna, USAWe were incredibly lucky to see a sperm whale, followed by two huge pods of common dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins. Our tour guide, Maria, and the captain were friendly and knowledgeable and wanted to ensure we had the perfect day. I was impressed by how respectful they were of the animals, taking their cues from their behavior – we didn’t stay too long with the common dolphins as they weren’t in the mood for play. We got out of their way, without causing distress.
We had a great lunch in Franca Da Villa, followed by an incredible afternoon snorkeling. The gear was provided by Maria. The Princess Ring is a special place, impressing our teenage boys as that’s where the Red Bull Cliff Diving Challenge is held. Incredible to see the huge cliffs they dive off. A fabulous day out which we all loved!
Rachel, USAWe went for a full day trip with Futurismo that included whale/dolphin watching, a nice lunch at a local restaurant, and then snorkeling in the Vila Franca Islet. The staff members are friendly and knowledgeable (and all speak great English). We saw one type of whale and two types of dolphins while out on the boat. My favorite part of the trip was the snorkeling– it was absolutely magical! 10/10 would highly recommend.
Catarina, PortugalThis is an absolute must-do if you visit the island. Actually, even if you have whale watched before or on other destinations, don’t give this a pass. On our trip, we saw humpback whales jumping around. It was an impressive experience!
Great staff, extremely educational.
Karina, PolandI highly recommend the Futurismo tour. Great experience, very professional staff, knowing every detail about the whales, so you can learn a lot. The first day the trip was canceled due to the weather, but we left the next day and saw 3 whales and lots of dolphins. An unforgettable experience!
Shinestar, PortugalA wonderful and unique experience. We were blessed with the sighting of several species of dolphins, killer whales, and blue whales. A memorable day that I will never forget.
Congratulations to the entire team, they were extraordinarily professional and of unparalleled friendliness. Congratulations to everyone, keep up this excellent work!!!
Henrique, PortugalI loved the fact that I was able to see lots of different animals and species!!! It definitely exceeded my expectations! A big thank you to Rafael Martins and Lucas Cidade!!!
Ana Santos, PortugalSince I was a child, I always remember wanting to go see the whales and dolphins of the Azores, but the opportunity only came now, when I’m over 30 years old. During those hours I felt the excitement and emotion as if I were a child again.
Thank you for providing these visits to observe these fantastic animals in their natural environment and not in a depressing pool.
Joseld, SpainThe trip that in principle was announcing between 2 1/2 and 3 hours was until 4 hours due to the way in which the enlistments were happening.
Carol, FranceI completely recommend this company. They were efficient, kind, and helpful. All our guides were amazingly gracious and interesting. Their understanding of the marine world was humbling and we learned so much. Brilliant, my daughter and I had the best time. Thank you.
Martin Merimen, UKIt was our first time with the whales. Very enjoyable trip! Staff was very helpful and kindly answered all our questions. Thanks for the wonderful experience!

Victoria, GermanyMy husband and I went on a tour on 22 October 2020. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions and safety measures we did not have a chance to go deeper into the ocean to see the whales, nevertheless, we were delighted to see various species of dolphins and sea turtles.
The tour was guided by a professional crew who is passionate about their work and are true ocean lovers!

Rodolfo, PortugalThe excursion was really worth it. The kids loved it and so did the adults. The team that followed, striving to show the species as much as possible. Thank you very much.

Andrea Sievers, GermanyIt’s impressive that we haven’t found anybody during our walking tour. It was amazing the communion with nature. It feels that nature is still untouched.
Ewan, The NetherlandsWe had a great whale watching trip! Compared to some of the other operators that were on the water the same day, these guys seem to care much more about the animals (when we spotted a whale, the captain slowly got us closer to it, trying not to disturb the animal, while some other boats went at it at top speed).
We saw about a dozen young sperm whales, and a large pod of dolphins, but even without any sightings, the fantastic three-hour boat trip would have been worth the money!
Joana Cardoso, PortugalAfter swimming with the dolphins in open sea I was feeling differently… I felt such a powerful energy. It’s an experience that I recommend to everybody!
John Smith, USAExcellent English spoken and very knowledgeable guides. The company shows true passion for working with guests and imparting a good cultural experience.
Jorgen Johansen, SwedenI enjoyed particularly the fact that we could visit São Miguel on the jeep tour and got a whole different idea from our last trip. Knowledgeable information is given by the guide about the island specially concerning Azorean history and traditions. Great service and wonderful friendly guides!
