About Geotourism

The power of earth energy

The volcanic origin of the Azores islands created mountains and valleys covered by rich and varied vegetation, lagoons of unique beauty, fumaroles, hot thermal waters, and absolutely amazing and breathtaking waterfalls.

Great mountain ranges submerged in the ocean formed the volcanic islands of the Azores and the visit we make to the Azores Volcanological and Geothermal Observatory will introduce you to the charms of the Earth’s energy power.

How geology formed the Azores

Geology has influenced Azorean History and people for almost six centuries. We managed to observe this influence at various levels, such as, for example, in the geographical occupation of the islands, in the use of natural resources, in traditions, in religion, in emigration, and even in tourism, it is an increasingly noticed reality.

Natural monuments

In São Miguel, it is possible to dive into the depths of the Earth by visiting Gruta do Carvão, the natural pools of hot water and iron in Furnas and Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande. Gruta do Carvão is a place classified as a natural monument. It is a lava tunnel with a wide variety of geological formations as a result of volcanic activity on the island of São Miguel.

It is always accompanied by a guide who explains the formation of the cave, in addition to the certified guide of Futurismo.

Undoubtedly a must-visit, especially if you like geology it is a great educational experience. Futurismo Azores Adventures offers guided tours to discover and experience the best that the nature of the Azores has to offer.

The volcanoes of the Azores

The effects of the strongest eruptions are still very visible. One of the most emblematic took place in 1957 on the island of Faial, in the so-called Capelinhos volcano, and ended on October 24, 1958. Ashes, sands, and the tower of an old lighthouse remain there today.

Years later, in August 2008, Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center opened. It tells the story of how it all happened. It is definitely a place to visit. On other islands, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Algar do Carvão cave, on Terceira island, and the Torres cave, on Pico island.

The earth releases energy

The Azores Archipelago is of volcanic origin and is considered by many geologists to be a case study. Earthquakes of low intensity occur on all islands with some frequency. Most of the time they are not felt, and there is no record of material damage. It is just the Earth releasing energy.

If you want to relax, you can also opt for thermal treatments at Ferraria thermal baths in São Miguel and at the Carapacho thermal baths in Graciosa. There are many options for excursions when we talk about geotourism in the Azores.
