Responsible Tourism
The cultural inheritance from the whale hunting conducted in the Azores is very strong due to the two hundred year old connection in between man and whales. This connection is preserved in our company but in a different perspective than before. Today’s whalers are pacifists and nature lovers that through observations and studies preserve the environment, keeping the connection with cetaceans alive. Rules of observation are respected and care is taken to not disturb cetaceans or their habitat. Our touristic activities are carried out simply to contemplate the unique beauty of these fascinating mammals. In addition we also arrange trips for scientific purpose and you are welcome to take part in these.
The Azorean transition between whaling and observation of whales and dolphins was peaceful and today it is impossible to think of going back to the old ways. But although an international agreement to stop whaling has been made, there are unfortunately countries that still practice whaling.
In the Azores, Futurismo made way for the new thinking by transforming whaling into whale watching, while keeping some traditional characteristics such as the use of original lookouts, vigias, to detect the whales. The whale watching tourism is at present of big importance for locals as well as for cetacean research.
On land activities we respect the nature and encourage our clients to do the same by not leaving anything behind but footprints.
The products that we use on picnics are local and in the programs that include lunch we always opt for the culinary of local restaurants.
It is our intention to enrich your visit and bring you into contact with local trades and the people that have these occupations. Therefore many of our programs include visits to local producers and different handcrafts and on these occasions you can interact with persons that generally like to talk about the traditions and life conditions on the island.
