Diving in the Azores

Diving in the Azores Islands is a unique underwater experience. The distance that separates both European and American continents from the Azores, together with their volcanic origin created very exclusive ecosystems.

From sandy volcanic bottoms to oceanic blue waters, not forgetting the natural reefs and wrecks, divers are able to discover how coastal species interact and cohabit with pelagic species that pass by due to the oceanic currents. The most important current is the Gulf Stream, which is responsible for the tepid waters from June till November. So that you better enjoy each dive, our team has local marine biologists that will make every single dive a fulfilling and enriching personal discover!

Subtropical climate and the Gulf Stream during high season (from June to November) will make it a once in a lifetime trip. Good water visibility and temperatures are common. The mixture of coastal and oceanic wildlife on the same dive spots is our best feature. Departure from Ponta Delgada Marina with full use of its facilities (bathrooms and warm showers) are standard. If you're tired of big diving operators and want to dive in small groups (max 6 divers plus guide) with local biologists we're your choice.

Why the Azores

When you think about the North Atlantic, you think of cold water, low visibility and some fish here and there. When you think about diving in islands, you think of coral reef with lots of predictable colourful fish. Forget all that! These are the Azores Islands. Imagine diving in water up to 24 degrees celsius at 20m depth with over 20m visibility. Imagine diving in the crater of an extinct volcano or in the canyon of the lava flow that created these islands. Imagine diving in a natural reef with all the wildlife typical of these coastal spots, but with pelagic schools of fish passing by. Imagine diving and, on the right having a reef, and on the left the big blue ocean where anything may happen. Imagine diving on a wreck with schools of fish circling you and barracudas hovering above. Can you imagine this picture? You don't have to...you can see it for yourself!

Why us?

Tired of big dive centres where you're diver number 57 of the day? Want to know the feeling of being the only boat on the dive spot with a maximum of 6 divers in your group? Want to learn more about what you see during the dives? We're what you're looking for. Nerus was created by a marine biologist that wanted to share his passion and knowledge with as many people as possible. We're located in Ponta Delgada, the most complete city of the Azores. Here you can find all modern facilities by European standards and dive in an unknown place being the only people diving in that spot. If you fancy the idea of having a truly exciting new experience in diving, try us. You'll want to come over and over again.
